MADRID, 30 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Thousands of people have gathered for the third consecutive day in different American cities over the weekend to protest the death of the African-American citizen Tire Nichols after a confrontation with the Police in Memphis, in the state of Tennessee.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the demonstrations began at noon, where a “large group” of protesters has marched through the city, stopping briefly at the Police Department, as reported by the ‘Milwaulee Journal Sentinel’.
In Oakland, California, a march began at 5:00 p.m. (02:00 Spanish peninsular time) in which the attendees joined the demands for justice for Nichols.
Protesters marched through the cities of New York, Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland, among other places, on Saturday, demanding an end to abuses of authority. On Friday, the cities of Chicago, Memphis or New York also hosted marches against police brutality.
Nichols, 29, died on January 10 from injuries caused by five former Memphis police officers, who will be prosecuted for allegedly committing the crime of murder. The young man died three days after the Police arrested him for allegedly reckless driving with his motorcycle.
These protests have been organized after the US authorities revealed the video showing the attack on Nichols, which shows how five officers beat the young man and electrocuted him with a taser.
For his part, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, expressed being “deeply hurt” upon seeing the video showing the death of Tire Nichols. “I was outraged and deeply hurt when I saw the horrible video of the beating that caused the death of Nichols,” the president said.
The trial against the five former police officers comes amid the social debate about police violence against black people, particularly since the murder by police officers of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, after which the well-known protest movement was born. like ‘Black Lives Matter’.
