The authorities of the Israeli city of Eilat, in the extreme south of the country, on the shore of the Red Sea between Israel and Jordan, have asked the country’s Government for immediate accommodation to house tens of thousands of displaced people from settlements near the Strip. of Gaza, scene on October 7 of an attack by Palestinian militias against these communities, triggering the war between Israel and Hamas.
The town’s mayor, Eli Lankeri, has ordered municipal officials to present to the Government a plan to build a “tent city” at the entrance to Eilat, where 60,000 displaced Israelis have arrived since the start of the conflict.
“Eilat is ready and willing to continue acting and absorbing people,” the mayor declared in comments reported by the Israeli newspaper ‘Maariv’.
According to the municipal plans reported by the newspaper, the authorities are contemplating the construction of a “macrofield” with a reserved area of ??150 square kilometers about two kilometers south of the city, a well-known tourist destination in the country.
“The municipal effort requires political assistance and I expect immediate assistance from the government to prepare it accordingly and on time,” he added.
