McCarthy has obtained 214 votes thanks to these new endorsements compared to 212 for Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, given that congressmen Jim Jordan and Kevin Hern -who have presented themselves in previous votes- have not been chosen this time as candidates, according to information from the television network CNN.
The favorite to win the leadership of the Lower House still needs to gain more support among the Republican ranks to finally win the qualified majority.
However, shortly after the vote and with the prospect of the process dragging on, McCarthy has expressed confidence that he will finally be elected tonight. “I have the votes,” he said when asked about the possibility of getting Republican congressmen Matt Rosendale and Eli Crane to finally endorse him.
In this sense, he stressed that when the plenary session resumes at 10:00 p.m., “I will have enough votes to put an end to this once and for all.” “That it has taken so long has taught us how to govern. So now we know how to do the job,” she said despite the fact that six Republican deputies have once again voted against her.
Sources close to the matter assure that the Republican congressman continues to need the vote of one of the six Republicans who continues to oppose his election to win a qualified majority, although the number will vary depending on how many deputies vote.
