MADRID, 5 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published this Saturday the modification of the order that will allow the British to vote in municipal elections after the country’s departure from the European Union (EU).
“The need and effectiveness are based on the intended objective of giving the same treatment to United Kingdom nationals as to those of the other twelve countries that have signed an agreement with Spain for municipal elections,” details the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation.
Until now, Spain had agreements with Bolivia, Cape Verde, Colombia, Korea, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand, to which the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland now joins North.
The governments of both countries reached an agreement as early as January 2019, which consisted of nine recitals and a total of nine articles and defined “British nationals” for the sole purpose of the agreement in question, without including “British citizens who obtain their nationality in connection with Gibraltar”.
