The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has arrived in kyiv around 8:20 this morning to meet with the Ukrainian authorities and deliver aid from the Spanish Government, as confirmed by diplomatic sources.

The head of diplomacy has traveled to the Ukrainian capital by train from the Polish city of Pzemyzil. Albares’ visit is the second visit by a member of the Government to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began on February 24, after the one made by the president, Pedro Sánchez, on April 21.

However, the Foreign Minister was in kyiv on February 9 to convey Spain’s solidarity at the height of the Moscow escalation. Then, he had the opportunity to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dimitro Kuleba, and with the Prime Minister, Denis Shmyhal.

On this occasion, in addition to his meetings with the Ukrainian authorities, he will deliver 30 ambulances, the sources have specified. His visit will also allow him to pay tribute to those who fell during the war as well as to see first-hand the situation in which kyiv and its citizens find themselves after the latest Russian bombings.

Russia has lately concentrated its attacks on strategic infrastructure in Ukraine, in particular in kyiv and other large cities. As a result of these, there have been power and water cuts in recent days in the capital.

The Foreign Minister had already hinted a few weeks ago that he intended to travel to kyiv. It was at the end of September, during the La Toja Forum, in a debate starring precisely with Kuleba. Then, Albares promised him that Spain will continue to provide financial, military and humanitarian support to Ukraine.
