The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, stated this Wednesday that the release of the so-called ‘Operation Camp’ is going to mark a before and after in public housing policy in the country as a whole, which is experiencing a situation of strong demand, shortage of supply and “some speculation” in the price, especially in the cities.
The president has intervened after the signing of the agreement between the Ministries of Defense and that of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, which has been carried out in the Los Castillejos barracks, headquarters of the Caballar Breeding Headquarters and the Equestrian Military School. Through this agreement, the department led by Margarita Robles transfers the land to that of Raquel Sánchez and marks the start of the project.
Thus, he has indicated that with the signing of this agreement “the final boost” is given to one of the main social housing initiatives not only in the Community of Madrid but in all of Spain, as he highlighted.
Along the same lines, he underlined “the difficulty in accessing decent housing” which, in his opinion, is not a simple problem of the market and adjustment between supply and demand, but above all it affects a social right recognized in the Constitution.
Sánchez has indicated that in this way he complies with the announcement made in the debate on the state of the nation, held last July, where he announced that he would promote this project. Already then he explained that 12,000 homes will be built in these old military installations, of which 60% will be protected.
In this regard, government sources refuse to speak of deadlines in which the new homes could be finished, although they indicate that it will be done as soon as possible and that it has already been working for a long time with the Madrid City Council.
The same sources indicate that both the mayor of the city, José Luis Martínez Almeida, and the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, were invited to this Tuesday’s event, although neither of them has attended.
According to Sánchez, for the Executive, housing is one of the basic pillars of the welfare state and therefore they must address this issue as a State policy. Thus, he has indicated that this operation will be “a before and after” in public policy on the matter.
