MADRID, 5 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, has warned that there are indications that, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed, for which he has appealed for collaboration from all parties, in particular Russia.
“We have information that leads us to believe that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed,” Khan said in an interview on Wednesday with the French network France 2. His office has sent personnel to Ukraine to examine “in situ” possible evidence and collect testimonies and the prosecutor himself has traveled three times.
“We work on the ground to determine the truth,” explained Khan, who has appreciated the collaboration provided so far by the Ukrainian authorities and, instead, has missed a minimum cooperation from the Russian side. For now, the appeals of the ICC have not prospered and Moscow remains on the sidelines of these investigations.
The prosecutor has clarified that the Prosecutor’s Office does not work “by objectives”, that is, with the prior goal of indicting some high-ranking official, but he has stressed that “it is clear” that no one goes unpunished, when being questioned about a possible accusation against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Every person has individual responsibility, be it a general, head of government or soldier,” he warned.
