The defendant says he is “surprised” that he has not managed to kill the writer

MADRID, 18 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A New York grand jury has charged this Thursday the suspect arrested for stabbing writer Salman Rushdie last week during an event, who from prison has confessed “surprised” by the fact that the author of ‘Satanic Verses’ continues with life.

The Prosecutor’s Office and the detainee’s defense attorney, Hadi Matar, have confirmed the accusation of this 24-year-old. On Saturday, he pleaded not guilty to several charges, including attempted murder, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, according to CNN.

Rushdie remains hospitalized but is slowly recovering from his injuries and is already talking to investigators. His attacker, meanwhile, has spoken from a Chautauqua county jail with the ‘New York Post’, to say among other things that he did not expect the writer to come out alive.

Matar has stated that he attended Rushdie’s act after the writer himself announced his presence on social networks. “He is someone who attacked Islam”, he has criticized him, although without confirming that he was acting moved by the ‘fatwa’ of Iran that calls for his assassination.

“I respect the Ayatollah (of Iran). I think he is a great person. That’s all I can say,” he limited himself to answering.
