The large Spanish banks entered 6.7% less for dividends in the first half of the year, up to 566.3 million euros, although profits from their investees soared 26.4%, to 581.9 million euros, according to the reports sent by the entities to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

In the first half of 2021, the entities analyzed –Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Sabadell, Bankinter and Unicaja Banco– received 607.1 million euros from dividends, while the results from their investee companies were 460.4 million euros last year.

If both concepts are added, in 2022, banking entered 7.5% more, up to 1,148.2 million, compared to the 1,067.5 million registered in 2021, according to CNMV reports collected by Europa Press.

However, the behavior for both magnitudes differs depending on the entity. CaixaBank recorded a 13.5% drop in dividend income, to 131 million euros. The bank explained that these remunerations come mainly from the dividend from Telefónica, which contributed 38 million euros in income to the entity, and Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA), which reported 87 million euros.

On the other hand, the bank reported a 48.4% reduction in the results contributed by its investees, to 112 million euros, after the sale of its stake in Erste Group Bank in the third quarter of 2021. joins the change in Bankia Vida, whose control took place at the end of 2021 after the agreement with Mapfre, and which has become integrated into the banking group by the global method as of January 2022. CaixaBank also has stakes in the Chilean bank BCI, Coral Homes and Gramina Homes.

For its part, BBVA reduced its income from dividends by 39.2%, to 76 million euros, although the remuneration distributed by Telefónica to its shareholders stood out. Regarding the contribution of profits by its investees, this concept rose to 15 million euros, compared to the losses of five million registered in the first half of 2021.

Santander recorded dividend income of 335 million euros in the first half of this year, which represents an increase of 8%, while profits from its investees amounted to 312 million euros, 91.4% more compared to to the same period in 2021. The bank explained in its semi-annual report that this boost was due to the greater contribution of the group’s associates in Spain and Brazil.

Banco Sabadell recorded dividend income of 2.47 million euros up to June, doubling the amount obtained through this concept in the same period of 2021, of 1.06 million euros. Likewise, the results contributed by its investees increased by 49.7%, especially by the shares of its investment arm BS Capital.

On the other hand, Unicaja Banco saw its income from dividends fall by 6.6% in the first half, to 12.4 million euros, although the earnings of its investees increased by almost 150% as a result of the merger by absorption of Liberbank in July 2021, which added new holdings to the banking group.

Finally, Bankinter shot up its dividend income by 39.6%, to 9.4 million. The profits from its investees also increased by almost 40%, to 19.8 million euros.
