MADRID, 10 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has announced that his Government will apply for accession to the European Union before the end of the year, within a campaign of integration into international blocs that already started a few weeks ago with the request to enter the Council of Europe.
Kurti has defended Kosovar’s commitment to EU regulation during a visit by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whom he has asked to endorse the aspirations of the former Serbian province, which also wants closer ties with NATO, according to local media.
Germany does recognize Kosovo as an independent country, but not five countries of the European Union, including Spain, which do not accept the unilateral declaration of independence decreed in 2008 as valid. The EU, however, acts as a mediator in the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, on which the generalized normalization of relations would depend.
The EU’s diplomatic initiative, which reactivated the dialogue process in 2020, seeks for the two parties to normalize their relations in binding terms and in accordance with international standards, something that it considers a ‘sine qua non’ condition for the European path.
