Gasunie will take steps to ensure that the Netherlands becomes less dependent on Russian gas. The state-owned company is looking at how it can import more liquefied natural gas (lng). This was announced by the gas infrastructure manager in the Netherlands and Germany on Monday.

the decisions follow the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia is an important supplier of gas for the Netherlands, but there are serious doubts about the reliability of Russia as an energy supplier.

the company is therefore going to look at how it can import more liquefied natural gas, which does not come from Russia. How the import capacity will be increased is not yet known. This needs to be clarified this year. Germany announced on Sunday that it plans to build two new terminals for LNG storage. The terminals should be located in Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuttel. Gasunie is involved in the construction of the latter terminal and hopes to be able to start construction this year. In Brunsbuttel, space must also be made for the storage of hydrogen.

furthermore, Gasunie CEO Han Fennema is on the shareholders ‘ committee of Nord Stream, a gas pipeline project between Russia and Germany. Fenema says he is now suspending this work. In addition, Gasunie will stop scientific collaborations and sharing knowledge with Russia.
