The Valencian towns of Xàtiva and Carcaixent have reached 36.6ºC, the highest temperature of this April 25 in Spain

MADRID, 26 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The last week of April ends with record temperatures, very high for this time of year and up to 12ºC higher than normal for the time, although the spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) Rubén del Campo predicts that The high values ??continue throughout the warm episode that is experienced in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands from this Monday and that will reach its highest point this Thursday and Friday, when it will exceed 38ºC in the south of the country.

Thus, on April 25, in most of Spain, daytime values ??were between 7 and 12ºC above normal in almost the entire Peninsula, except in the northern third. For example, in the Valencian Community they reached 36ºC in the case of the towns of Xàtiva and Carcaixent, both in the province of Valencia, reached 36.6ºC, the highest records on Tuesday in Spain.

In addition, maximum temperature records have been broken, among which two of the main AEMET network stations stand out: Córdoba Airport, which reached 35.1ºC –which exceeds the 34ºC of the previous record of April 2017– and that of the Jerez de la Frontera Airport, where 35ºC was reached, which exceeds the 33.6º of the previous record registered in April 1997.

In any case, the spokesperson has predicted that it is “quite likely” that in the coming days these records “will be broken again and others fall in different locations” since “the warmest days of this episode, whose climax It will be on Thursday and Friday in most of Spain”.

“Although on Saturday there will be a thermal decrease in expanding areas, the heat will still be very intense in the eastern third of the Peninsula and in the Balearic Islands,” he pointed out. For Sunday and Monday, he has indicated that “there is still uncertainty, although it seems that temperatures will continue to drop, but the truth is that in the central half of the south, the warm environment for the season will continue, with records between 5 and 10ºC above what normal”.

Looking ahead to next week, he has indicated that it is “possible that starting Tuesday temperatures will rise again and the atmosphere will continue to be very warm in almost the entire country during the coming week.”

On the other hand, he explained that “we will have to wait to analyze in detail the temperatures for this month of April, but it is possible that this month of 2023, driven above all by this warm episode, will be between one of the two months of April more warm of the historical series”. “For as long as there are records, several of the temperatures reached between April 25 and 30 could be the warmest for those dates, since at least 1950,” she said.

Regarding rainfall, the lack of rain this month of April has stood out: between the past days 1 and 23, 12 liters per square meter had been collected in Spain, 25% of the normal value. During this weekend precipitation is expected in the northern third of the Peninsula and some storms in the rest of the northern half. For this reason, he has indicated that “it is quite probable that April 2023 will end as the driest in the historical series in Spain as a whole, surpassing April 1995, when 23 liters per square meter fell”

Regarding the forecast for these next few days, higher temperatures are expected this Wednesday than Tuesday in almost the entire country, except in the Mediterranean area where temperatures will drop due to the effect of the breezes, while in the Ebro Valley, central area and southern half will reach or exceed 30ºC, with more than 36ºC in the Guadalquivir valley.

On Thursday, in general, slightly cloudy skies are expected, although the cloudiness will increase throughout the day with possible isolated showers in the Catalan Pyrenees, but the rise in temperatures will continue in almost the entire country. Thursday morning will be warm and it may not drop below 20ºC on the Andalusian coast and also in parts of the interior of this community, so it will be tropical nights.

On Thursday afternoon it will exceed 30ºC in the Ebro Valley and in Zaragoza it could reach 31ºC; Also in the downtown area, for example Madrid capital could reach 30ºC. In the southern half, 32ºC will be widely exceeded, in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys 36ºC and even 38ºC in the Guadalquivir Valley, in the provinces of Córdoba and Seville.

“It cannot be ruled out that these two Andalusian capitals, Seville and Córdoba, will reach 39ºC on Thursday and Friday will be the warmest day of the episode, in general, with a new rise in night temperatures, also daytime, although the latter They won’t change too much in the southwest quadrant,” the spokesman predicted.

In this way, they will dawn above 20ºC in many points of Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura and will once again exceed 30ºC in the Ebro Valley, with Zaragoza even reaching 32ºC, in the northern plateau with Valladolid and Zamora at 31ºC and in Galicia, in Ourense, they could have 31ºC. That same temperature could be reached in Madrid in the downtown area, thus beating Madrid its record for the month of April with 30.1ºC registered in 1945.

The warmest environment in Spain will be in the Guadalquivir Valley, with temperatures similar to those of Thursday, which could exceed 38ºC and even 39ºC in the provinces of Seville and Córdoba.

On Saturday the minimum temperatures will continue to rise, the nocturnal and tropical nights will persist in points of the southern half and could even reach the center of the Peninsula: it is not ruled out that cities such as Toledo or Madrid will not drop below 20ºC.

On the contrary, there will be a drop in temperatures, which will be especially pronounced in the northern third of the peninsula, where it will be up to 6 or 8ºC compared to the previous day, although they will rise in the Mediterranean and Balearic regions as a result of the arrival of winds from the west dry and overheated. In the east of the Peninsula, the atmosphere will continue to be very warm, with 34ºC in Lleida or 36ºC in Murcia; And in Andalusia the heat will continue, although somewhat less than in the two previous days: Córdoba, Granada or Seville will still reach 36ºC.

On Saturday rains are expected in Galicia, Cantabria and the Pyrenees and storms may form in other areas of the northern half. By Sunday, temperatures will continue to drop, especially in the east of the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands, but tropical nights will persist in southern Andalusia and daytime heat in the Guadalquivir Valley, although it will not be as intense as in previous days.

On Sunday, the atmosphere will be cooler in the northern third and, for example, A Coruña, San Sebastián, Vitoria or Pamplona will remain with maximum temperatures between 18 and 20ºC. The rains will continue in the extreme north and there could be storms again in other parts of the northern half, especially after noon.

Looking ahead to next week, temperatures could continue to drop on May 1, although the warm environment will continue in the south of the Peninsula and there may be some stormy showers again in the northern half of the peninsula. Temperatures may recover again as of Tuesday, so the spokesperson reiterated that “a very warm environment is expected for this time of year.”

In the case of the Canary Islands, slightly cloudy skies will predominate over the next few days and temperatures will also rise, especially on the weekend, so there will also be a warm environment for the season but not as markedly warm as on the Peninsula. In the coming days, temperatures of 30 or 32ºC may be exceeded in points in the south of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
