MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
French security forces killed an armed man early this Friday who threatened to set fire to a synagogue in the city of Rouen, located in the Normandy region.
The French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has indicated that a police officer used his weapon to “neutralize an armed individual who clearly wanted to set fire to the city’s synagogue” and has congratulated the officers for “their response capacity and his courage”, as he indicated in a message posted on his social network account X.
The incident took place around 6:45 a.m. (local time), when security forces moved to the area due to the presence of smoke. There they ran into a man carrying a knife and an iron bar who, according to sources close to the matter reported to the newspaper ‘Le Figaro’, lunged at the agents.
The mayor of the city, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, has indicated that “there have been no more victims to mourn” and has stated that the “started fire in the synagogue is being brought under control by the Fire Department.” Thus, he has transferred his support to the Jewish community of Rouen.
