The Spanish women’s basketball team will face Greece, Montenegro and Latvia in Eurobasket 2023, within Group A, which will take place this summer, after the draw held this Wednesday in Ljubljana.

Those led by Miguel Méndez started in pot 1 of seeded heads along with France, Belgium and Serbia for the event that will be hosted by Israel and Slovenia from June 15 to 25, with Tel Aviv being the Spanish headquarters for this group stage.

Spain, four times European champion and number four in the FIBA ranking, starts as a favourite, although with no margin for error, to win the group and get one of the four tickets to the quarterfinals. Greece points out as the most difficult rival, number 17 in FIBA, although the level is even with Montenegrins and Latvians.

The Spanish team began its current stage with Méndez in September 2021, facing an immaculate qualifying phase for the Eurobasket. The Galician coach has 10 victories in 10 games as coach, a record that none of his four predecessors reached and has renewed the roster of players.

Spain, which had a friendly draw avoiding especially the host Slovenia, has pending accounts at the international level since in the European Championship two years ago it lost in the quarterfinals against Serbia in extra time and was left out of the World Cup last year.
