He thanks Albares for his work, but doubts Spain’s “power of conviction” in the EU

BARCELONA, 19 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The former president of the Generalitat and MEP of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, has celebrated that no State has “vetoed” this Tuesday that Catalan is official in the European Union (EU) and has urged the Government to continue working to achieve its recognition.

In a video on the social network this Tuesday.

In that sense, he has defended that the fact that no State has opposed the measure implies “the launch” of the process for making it official, pending the reports commissioned by the Council of the EU to decide.

“But this is not enough and the Spanish State knows it,” said Puigdemont, who asked not to waste time because the opportunity to make Catalan official – he said – is now.

The former president of the Generalitat has maintained that the result of the EU Council meeting this Tuesday shows that “the reality is different” from what the acting president, Pedro Sánchez, stated when he assured that Spain makes itself heard in the EU.

Thus, he pointed out that the reluctance of some Member States, such as Finland or Sweden, has occurred “perhaps because it is the first time that Spain asks other members to support the Catalan language, or perhaps due to a lack of power of conviction.”

However, he thanked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, for his effort and “interest” in achieving the official status of Catalan, one of the commitments assumed by PSOE and Sumar within the framework of the agreement for the Congress Table with the independentists. .

“The path to achieving this must be irreversible without having to wait long, because we have already waited long enough,” he said.

Puigdemont also thanked the work of Plataforma per la Llengua and the technical teams, and added that the support of Member States for the official status of Catalan shows that diversity is “a real and deep-rooted value” in the EU.
