-House of Suntory Launches Limited Edition Hibiki 21-Year-Old Whiskey and Hibiki Japanese Harmony Bottle Design in Honor of Centenary Anniversary

The pioneering house of Japanese whiskey reveals two new limited edition bottlings within its six-part celebratory centenary range.

NEW YORK, Sept. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — As 2023 marks a momentous year for House of Suntory, the founding house of Japanese whiskey is delighted to reveal the long-awaited centenary release of Hibiki 21-Year-Old and a design of limited edition bottle of Hibiki Japanese Harmony that honors the four seasons and is a nod to the past, present and future. The two limited releases mark the latest whiskey offerings from House of Suntory’s centennial anniversary celebration, honoring a century since founder Shinjiro Torii established Japan’s first single malt whiskey distillery in 1923.

Originally making its debut in 1989, Hibiki is considered among the most prestigious whiskeys in the world and has become one of the most sought-after Japanese blended whiskeys. Hibiki is a harmonious blend of various malt and grain whiskeys from Suntory’s Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries. The limited edition Hibiki 21-Year-Old is a delicate blend of malt and grain whiskeys that are meticulously blended to create an orchestra of flavors and aromas. For this special centenary edition, rare Mizunara oak is placed at the forefront, deeply influencing the blend while maintaining the character and essence of Hibiki.

“For the limited edition Hibiki 21-Year-Old, our team took on the challenge of crafting a new blend to celebrate our centenary,” said Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo. “With meticulous precision, we managed to harness the challenging yet rewarding characteristics of Japanese Mizunara oak to accentuate the unique flavor profile for which our hibiki whiskeys are known. This special whiskey showcases our continued dedication to craftsmanship at House of Suntory.”

The centenary anniversary label design on the Hibiki 21-Year-Old bottle artfully displays a gradual transition of colors that evokes the sunrise in Japan, a symbol of life, vitality and the ever-floating passage of time. In Japanese culture, the sun has deep meaning as it nourishes the surrounding nature and provides essential energy. It is a reminder to appreciate life and embrace the changes that come with each passing moment.

In the color of tender gold, this extraordinary whiskey embodies the spirit of “wa” or unity, with attractive aromas. It offers refined and elegant notes of kumquat and jasmine with Japanese incense. The palate is subtly sweet and floral combined with spicy sandalwood and agarwood. The result is a long, deep finish with spicy Mizunara wood undertones. Hibiki 21-Year-Old is bottled at 43 percent ABV. It is available globally in select markets.

The century-old design of House of Suntory’s Hibiki Japanese Harmony bottle brings to life the art of “Monozukuri” craftsmanship: it is this same relentless pursuit of quality, ingenuity and expressiveness that has inspired the design of each of the century-old limited editions of home. The packaging of the centenary edition of Hibiki Japanese Harmony features snow, moon and flower motifs that represent the changing seasons in Japan. The ‘Kakehashi’ (bridge) depicted on the bottle connects Japan and the world with the past, present and future. The water flowing beneath is pure and clear, symbolizing cleansing from difficulties and calamities. The ‘Kakehashi’ symbolizes the emotional connection of the Japanese people to their country’s unique seasonality and its importance in everyday life, fostering an appreciation for time that deeply resonates and inspires Hibiki.

Amber in color, this luminous and delicate whiskey presents notes of rose, lychee, a touch of rosemary, mature wood and sandalwood on the nose. In the mouth it offers aromas of sweetness similar to honey, candied orange peel and white chocolate. The finish is both subtle and tender with a touch of Mizunara. Hibiki Japanese Harmony is bottled at 43 percent ABV. It is available globally in select markets.

Earlier this year, the House presented its centenary edition of the Yamazaki 18-Year-Old Mizunara and Hakushu 18-Year-Old Peated Malt whiskeys. Limited centenary labels of the Yamazaki 12-Year-Old and Hakushu 12-Year-Old flagships were also released for the centenary. All four are available in select markets around the world.
