Philips has presented in Barcelona its strategy and vision for the future of health and health data management with the help of clinical leaders in the sector. With the ICCA critical information system as a basis, some of the co-developed solutions are presented and how these have contributed to the improvement of care and processes.
Barcelona, ??October 20, 2023 – Philips Iberia, a world leader in health technology, has brought together intensive care experts from all over Spain in Barcelona to discuss the main challenges in managing health data within Intensive Care Units ( ICU) and how health technology can facilitate diagnosis and clinical decision making in this critical environment.
The meeting, organized by the Philips Connected Care and Solutions team, has been structured in four blocks, each focused on a specific moment of clinical data, its management and the different existing tools for its optimization and use within the framework of an ICU: digitization of processes, optimized visualization of information, management of resources and flows and the statistical exploitation of data.
“Philips Iberia has been working for many years with more than 700 Spanish hospitals and 48,000 professionals in the critical care area and, as a result of that work and the lessons learned, we have been able to co-develop advanced solutions that facilitate the management of clinical data in intensive care units for better patient treatment with a real impact on the daily lives of professionals,” said Frederic Martinez Sacchi, head of Connected Care at Philips Iberia.
These solutions allow intensive care services to move towards the concept of Smart ICU, which consists, as explained by Dr. Jordi Morillas, head of the Intensive Medicine Service at SCIAS-Hospital de Barcelona, ??“in having information in more detail, faster and with more context to make better decisions.”
The basis on which new solutions must be built is to guarantee the digitalization of data with quality and security. ICCA (IntelliSpace Critical Care and Anesthesia) is an advanced system for clinical decision support and digitalization of data from the clinical environment that integrates with all information systems and devices that monitor the patient in an agnostic and transversal way of all ICU data.
“With ICCA we have a lot of clinical data that is automatically downloaded from monitoring devices, such as blood pressure monitors or heart rate readers, and treatment devices, such as respirators or extrarenal purification machines. The use of ICCA minimizes data transcription errors and frees up time to perform other tasks that add value at the bedside,” adds Dr. Morillas.
“In addition, ICCA allows safe electronic prescription through drug libraries and connection with the hospital pharmacy,” comments Dr. María Cruz Martín, head of the Intensive Medicine Service at the 12 de Octubre University Hospital. “It constitutes a basic tool for care activity in intensive care units and is perfectly integrated into the hospital clinical history,” continues Dr. Martín.
MEDDIS solutions in Spain
The Philips Iberia MEDDIS solutions team has been working since 2018 and has not stopped incorporating new profiles focused on health consulting, solution architecture, clinical applications or data analysis. Positioning ourselves as leaders in digital transformation in health and working together to go “Beyond data” is part of the main objectives. This team has successfully implemented several regional projects in Spain based on ICCA for the health systems of Castilla y León (SACYL), Euskadi (Osakidetza) and Murcia.
“We have clearly moved from paper data management to compartmental clinical information systems that allow us to collect data from all the devices around the patient,” explains Dr. María Cruz Martín. “We can also analyze the data in real time and convert it into useful information to evaluate the quality of care and management of the ICUs,” continues the head of Intensive Medicine at Hospital 12 de Octubre.
“We increasingly have patients with more pathologies, undergoing more medical and surgical treatments and at older ages, and therefore, more vulnerable patients,” says Dr. Jordi Morillas. “For this we have technology that will help us treat them more effectively, but the challenge is to apply this technology efficiently and disseminate it so that it reaches all intensive care units,” concludes the head of Intensive Medicine at SCIAS-Hospital de Barcelona.
