MADRID, Spain, September 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosts the 45th expanded meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, taking place from September 10 to 25 in Riyadh, capital of the Kingdom .

Composed of representatives of 21 States Parties, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee unanimously chose the Kingdom of Arabia as the location after four years without taking place in person. This unanimous decision recognizes the Kingdom’s efforts in supporting heritage preservation and protection efforts, in line with UNESCO’s objectives.

The opening ceremony was held at the Al Murabba palace, one of the buildings rescued from the historic center and a key piece of the city’s architectural heritage. The theme of the meeting, “Together for a foreseeable tomorrow”, highlights the importance of protecting and celebrating culture and heritage in a constantly changing world to achieve a better future. As part of the exhibition of Saudi culture, several traditional and contemporary artists performed, and traditional food was served during the opening banquet of the Committee meeting.

Currently, Saudi Arabia has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Hegra Archaeological Site, At-Turaif District in ad-Dir’iyah, Historic Jeddah, Rock Art in the Hail Region, Al-Ahsa Oasis and ?im? Cultural Area -, and has included another proposal for consideration at this year’s Committee meeting.
