The film by J.A. Bayona, ‘The Snow Society’, has this Saturday touched the top of the record held by ‘The Sea Inside’ (14 Goyas) by winning 12 ‘big heads’ at the 38th Goya Awards ceremony, held at the Valladolid Fair . In the case of ‘The Snow Society’ it has won 12 of the 13 big heads for which it was competing, among which are two of the most important, Best Film and Best Direction. It thus becomes the third film with the most ‘big heads’, also behind ‘Ay, Carmela!’ which in 1990 won 13 awards out of the 15 to which it aspired.
Another of the night’s favorite films, ‘20,000 species of bees’ – which led the Goya race with 15 nominations – has won three awards: Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay, both for Estibaliz Urresola; and Best Supporting Actress, for Ane Gabarain.
Bayona’s film has started the Gala strong, with awards in a dozen categories such as Best Production Direction (for Margarita Huguet), Best Art Direction (Alain Bainée), Best Sound (Jorge Adrados, Oriol Tarragó and Marc Orts), Best Cinematography (Pedro Luque), Best Editing (Andrés Gil and Jaume Martí), Best New Actor (Matías Recalt), Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Ana López-Puigcerver, Belén López-Puigcerver and Montse Ribé), Best Special Effects ( Pau Costa, Félix Bergés and Laura Pedro) and Best Costume Design (Julio Suárez).
Although it was impossible for it to surpass the record reached in 2024 by Alejandro Amenábar’s ‘The Sea Inside’, which competed in 15 nominations and won the Best Film Award, Bayona’s film has won 12 of the 13 awards for the who competed On the opposite side of the scale is ‘20,000 species of bees’, with three Goyas compared to the 15 he aspired to.
In the acting section, David Verdaguer has won the award for Best Leading Actor for ‘Saber That’ and Malena Alterio has won the award for Best Leading Actress for ‘Que Nadie Duerma’, while the Goya for Best Supporting Actor has gone to José Crowned by ‘Cerrar los ojos’ and ‘Best New Actress’ went to Janet Novás for ‘O corno’.
In the shorts category, the Best Animated Short Film has been awarded to ‘To bird or not to bird’, by Martín Romero; the Best Documentary Short Film to ‘Ava’, by Mabel Lozano; and the Best Fiction Short Film to ‘Although it’s at night’, by Guillermo García López
On the other hand, as Best European Film, the multi-award-winning and five-Oscar candidate ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (France), by Justine Triet, was recognized; while in Best Ibero-American Film the award went to ‘La memoria infinite’ (Chile), by Maite Alberdi, also nominated for the Hollywood Awards; and in Best Animated Film for ‘Robot Dreams’, by Ángel Durández, Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé, Pablo Berger and Sandra Tapia. This film has won the Goya for Adapted Screenplay for Pablo Berger.
In addition, the Goya for Best Documentary Film has gone to ‘While it is you, the here and now of Carme Elias’, by Claudia Pinto Emperador and Iván Martínez-Rufat and the Best Original Song has been awarded to Riboberta Bandini, for ‘Yo solo Quiero love’ from the movie ‘I’m loving you madly’.
