MADRID, 10 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, assured this Friday that Christmas in the city is “the most important emerging tourist phenomenon in Europe”, while praising the boom in tourism there.
In a colloquium organized by the Executive Forum, Caballero highlighted that more than two million people visited Vigo at Christmas 2021 and emphasized that the figures have been achieved “without spending a euro on advertising”.
He has thus drawn a parallelism with the Xunta de Galicia, which does advertise the Camino de Santiago or Xacobeo but “the mobilization does not reach the middle of Christmas in Vigo”. In this line, he has lamented that the city has not achieved “any support” from the Xunta and has maintained that he himself has become “an advertisement man”.
At the same time, Caballero welcomed the fact that the name of Vigo “is linked to Christmas throughout the world”, something that is “extraordinary”. Likewise, he has asked the private company to do what it has to do, that is, build hotels to be able to satisfy the tourist demand in Vigo.
On the other hand, after praising the “political model” of Vigo, he has attacked the former president of the Xunta and current president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, emphasizing that he was a “very bad president” for Vigo. However, he has insisted that he speaks “in terms of Vigo” and has refused to issue a “political opinion.”
