MADRID, 22 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (Alpine) has assured that they have made “a race in terms of tire management and strategy” in the Spanish Grand Prix, since “you cannot ask for more” finishing in the points zone after starting latest.
“I started from the worst position. Starting last, you can’t ask for more than to finish in the points. It was a race on our part in terms of tire management and strategy,” he told DAZN after the race at Circuit of Barcelona-Catalonia.
The Spaniard regretted that the last ‘pitstop’ was “too long”, although “he does not” believe that “he would have changed any position”. “I’m very happy. I’ve started fifth or sixth at times this year and I haven’t managed to get any points, something always happened; this time, starting last and taking the opportunity to change the engine and sacrificing the weekend thinking that we weren’t going to score, we have scored. The world upside down,” he said.
“I think it’s been another weird weekend and we haven’t made the most of our potential. Sixth or seventh would have been possible, where Valtteri -Bottas- or Ocon finished. We still need to improve and hopefully after Monaco we’ll have a good run”, continuous.
Finally, the two-time world champion acknowledged his emotion at the atmosphere in Montmeló. “We train a lot here with empty stands, and when the Grand Prix comes around in May it looks like another circuit when you fill it with color and passion. It was exciting to race in front of them,” he concluded.
