Bagnaia reigns in Mugello and sneaks into the fight between Quartararo and Aleix Espargaró

Marc Márquez finishes tenth in his last race before undergoing surgery

The Italian rider Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia (Ducati) won this Sunday in the MotoGP race of the Italian Grand Prix, the eighth round of the Motorcycle World Championship, ahead of the first two in the championship, the Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) and the Spanish Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia), while Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) says goodbye momentarily to the World Championship to undergo his fourth operation, closing the ‘Top 10’.

With his first victory at Mugello, ‘Pecco’ rises to fourth place in the drivers’ standings, 41 points behind the leader Quartararo (122); The man from Nice leads the general standings with eight units over Aleix Espargaró (114), who has achieved four consecutive podiums, and both took advantage of the fall of Enea Bastianini (Ducati), third in the World Cup (94).

Without the threat of rain and lightning that surprised the drivers in Q2, Italian Luca Marini (Ducati) took the lead after overtaking Saturday’s ‘poleman’, his compatriot Fabio Di Giannantonio (Ducati), at the start, but it was Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati) who managed to settle in front a few laps later.

The leader of the World Championship, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), managed to place himself second while waiting for an opportunity in the large group of riders who aspired to lead the event. On lap 10, ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia (Ducati) surged to the top, and the Nice rider focused on fending off the onslaught of the two Mooney VR46 Racing Team riders, Marini and Bezzecchi.

As the laps went by, ‘El Diablo’ was cutting time with ‘Pecco’, and behind, starting seventh, Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) focused on climbing positions to reach third with seven laps to go. From there to the finish line, the positions did not change.

Among the rest of the Spaniards, Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) finished twelfth, just ahead of Jorge Martín (Ducati) and Àlex Márquez (Honda), and Raúl Fernández (KTM) twenty-first. Neither Joan Mir nor Àlex Rins (Suzuki) nor Pol Espargaró (Repsol Honda) managed to finish the race after crashing.
