Zoom in on three trades of manufacturing a direct relationship with the luxury industry, and where the demand is high: the sectors of the fur, leather goods and footwear. The top of the range!
Making shoes for the dancers of the Opera of Paris, a bag for Chanel, a fur coat for Hermes… requires know-how of the highest level. These trades of the luxury industry have made the fame of France and attracts more and more young people, fascinated by a sector in full expansion.
The heart of the business, it is manufacturing, a field in which there is formed the third, preparing a CAP (certificate of professional aptitude) in two years, a professional degree in three years, a BMA (brevet des métiers d’art) in two years, or a CFLI (complementary training of local initiative) in a year.
For graduates, there are two BTS: a BTS métiers de la mode-clothes and a BTS trades of fashion shoe and leather goods. It is even possible to get a CAP after lifting the tray or started graduate studies. The student then is exempted from general subjects, and follows a curriculum accelerated by one year.
The fur, driven by the asian market
According to the president of the French Federation of the trades of the fur, France has 150 companies in this sector – the leader, Solomon, is furrier since 1920. The haute couture collections of furs are very appreciated, in particular by the customer the asian and Russian. For this job, which requires great care and technique, “on average, it takes six years of studies before being operational,” according to the president of the school.
The diploma is the CAPE with the fur, which prepares learning in both CFA (centers of apprentice training) in Lyon and in Strasbourg, subject to status school, in high school Turquetil Paris, with few students. “The fact that the training leads on a CAP and not a professional degree can to be acceptable to young people and their parents,” says the headmaster, Alain Soreil. A degree neighbour – the CAPE garment of skin – is proposed in three locations: high school Turquetil Paris, at the lycée Jean-Rostand in Angoulême and in the CFA of the PRES of Lyon.

In France, a small twenty institutions offer a course leather or a “bac professionnel” métiers du cuir option leather goods. Students follow courses in cutting, preparation, stitching and finishing of products. It is possible to continue by BTS trades of fashion shoe and leather goods at the lycée d’alembert in Paris, at the lycée Dauphiné at Romans-sur-Isère or at the high school of fashion at Cholet. Finally, the high school Turquetil Paris offers a CFLI leather working of luxury in order to better meet the demand of the companies in paris. The shoe, style and know-how
If the manufacture of mass is in loss of speed, there is a real market for shoes top of the range. With two degrees, in order to form: a box professional crafts of the leather option shoes and a BTS trades of fashion shoe and leather goods. “We work regularly with prestigious companies such as Hermès, Vuitton, Mephisto, or the Opera of Paris,” explains Martine Ouanson, head of works at the lycée d’alembert in Paris.
