Urges the Generalitat to extend the agreements to promote the social use of Sareb homes in Catalonia
MADRID, 4 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, has acknowledged that the financial rescue plan for the creation of the Management Company for Assets Proceeding from Bank Restructuring (Sareb) “has failed” and has assured that, since the Government has taken control of society, has acted to increase the public housing stock.
In the control session of the Government held this Tuesday in the plenary session of the Senate, the senator of the Esquerra Republicana-Euskal Herria Bildu (GPERB) Parliamentary Group Sara Bailac Ardanuy criticized that the plan to create Sareb has not served to recover the 65,000 million euros from the rescue to the financial sector or to address the housing emergency.
Likewise, the senator asked the Minister for Economic Affairs what the Government intends to do to guarantee the social use of the homes managed by Sareb, once it has taken control of what is known as the ‘bad bank’.
“I share with you the assessment that the rescue plan and the plan to create Sareb made by the Popular Government have failed. I agree, because last year we had to account for 35,000 million as public debt for a project that was He said that it was not going to cost Spanish citizens a penny,” Calviño acknowledged.
The minister highlighted the fact that, after assuming this inheritance, the Government has worked with “the utmost responsibility” and has tried to manage Sareb with “the highest efficiency criteria” to try to maximize the recovery of public funds and maximize the efficiency from the social point of view.
“Since we have taken control, we have not stopped acting with great determination to increase the public housing stock, to encourage agreements to be reached with the agencies that have competence in housing and to try to find the best solutions to promote this social role that we want to give Sareb”, said Calviño.
However, the GPERB senator has criticized that “hundreds of municipalities” in Catalonia face the problem that the municipalities cannot access the housing inventory without establishing agreements with Sareb for social use and has demanded that the assets so that Sareb’s homes in Catalonia are managed from that Autonomous Community.
In response, the Minister for Economic Affairs recalled that, precisely, before the summer the Catalan minister “had no interest” in renewing and extending the agreement that the Government had with the Generalitat to try to promote the social use of housing in Sareb in Catalonia. “I will find out if there has been any change in that position, because I was surprised by the lack of interest that we tested before the summer,” Calviño pointed out.
Regarding the request to transfer Sareb’s assets to the Autonomous Community, the Minister for Economic Affairs has added that this is an approach that does not respond to the objective of managing the public park as efficiently as possible and returning the resources contributed by the Spanish society.
“Within this framework, our will is maximum and I hope that the Generalitat shows its willingness to continue extending and expanding our collaboration agreements,” he settled.
