Ciccone proved to be the fastest on the climb to Cogne and was left alone 20 kilometers from the finish line after leaving Colombian Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) and Spaniard Antonio Pedrero (Movistar) behind, to crown alone and sign his third triumph of stage in the ‘pink corsa’.
The transalpine round will rest this Monday for the last time before facing its demanding final week. On Tuesday, the riders will face the queen stage, a 202-kilometre alpine day between Salò and Aprica with more than 5,000 meters of elevation gain and three first-class climbs.
The Goletto di Cadino will welcome the cyclists before descending towards one of the great passes of the ‘corsa rosa’, the Passo de Mortirolo, which they will climb from the Monno side along a road that becomes narrow and steep three kilometers from the summit. After the flat stage, Teglio will be ascended, and a quick descent to Tresenda will precede the final climb of Valico di Santa Cristina.
