MADRID, 30 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The authorities of the self-proclaimed republic of Donetsk have announced this Monday that some of the prisoners of the Azovstal steel plant, including those who surrendered, will be sentenced to death.
This has been made known by the head of the Donetsk Ministry of Justice, Yuri Sirovatko, who has promised that “a fair decision will be made on each specific case”, in statements to the Russian agency Interfax.
“First I can say that among those who are in custody, there are people who will receive the death penalty, Sirovatko has communicated, who, on the other hand, has stressed that “all prisoners of war are kept in dignified conditions”.
“They are given three meals a day, medical care and all the essentials,” Sirovatko wanted to underline.
A few days ago, one of the spokesmen for the Government of this self-proclaimed republic, Viktor Gavrilov, announced that there are three “foreign mercenaries” –two British and one Moroccan– who may also face the death penalty for participating in the actions of the Ukrainian Army.
They are the British Sean Piner and Andrew Hill and the Moroccan Sadun Brahim, captured during clashes in Donbas in the spring of 2022. They are part of the almost 7,000 foreigners from more than 60 countries who participate on the side of kyiv in the conflict, according to Russia.
On May 20, Russia reported the definitive seizure of the Azovstal plant, the last stronghold of the resistance offered by the Ukrainian forces in the besieged city of Mariupol, located on the shores of the Azov Sea, in an attempt to close the exit to the the Ukrainian sea and unite the Donbas region with the Crimean peninsula, both under the umbrella of the Kremlin.
