He defends in Uruguay “unblocking” the EU-Mercosur agreement and puts Lacalle as an example of “useful” politics

MADRID, 4 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, presented himself this Friday in Montevideo (Uruguay) as the “alternative” to the Government of Pedro Sánchez at the head of a “more moderate, focused and reformist” party that is committed to “recovering the great pacts “. In addition, he has defended “unblocking” the treaty between the EU and Mercosur, once the elections have been held in Brazil.

This was stated in statements to the media after a “productive and cordial” meeting with the president of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou. Later, he will hold a meeting with businessmen and will also deliver a conference entitled “Good politics: moderation and agreement against populism”, at the Catholic University of Uruguay.

Feijóo, who has revealed the friendship that binds him to Lacalle, has explained that during the meeting they have mainly talked about the Spanish community; and the relationship between Spain and Uruguay, as well as the relationship between Mercosur and the EU. In addition, he has exposed the basic lines of his political project as leader of the PP, a position he has held for seven months.

After underlining that in 2023 there will be municipal, regional and general elections and, therefore, it is a “very important year from the electoral point of view”, Feijóo has stressed that the Government of Pedro Sánchez has a “huge parliamentary weakness”. Thus he has reported that this Executive “rests in an electoral coalition” with a “tripartite where the Communist Party (IU) and Podemos are”, which is supported in turn by the “independence parties” of Catalonia and the Basque Country.

For this reason, he has said that it would be “appropriate to try that the alternative” of the PP, a “more moderate, focused and reformist” party that is committed to “recovering the great State pacts”, can have “the possibility of governing Spain if the Spaniards “They want him in the elections.

In an economic key, the leader of the opposition has defended “unblocking” the EU-Mercosur agreement. In his opinion, Spain has to “be the bridge between the EU and Mercosur”. “I would like us to quickly establish a commercial treaty and a definitive agreement between Mercosur and the European Union”, he explained, adding that he hopes that this can happen “sooner rather than later”, especially now that they have already produced the elections in Brazil.

In addition, he has put Uruguay as an example of a “reliable” country and has stressed that Lacalle practices a “useful” policy and is “a reference for good governance, institutionality and stability.” According to him, he added, if he arrives at the Palacio de la Moncloa, he will be a priority partner for Spain.
