Apple has introduced a new feature called Vocal Shortcuts in the latest iOS 18 update, allowing users to change the wake word for Siri. This means you can customize a phrase that Siri will recognize to launch shortcuts and perform tasks. One of the shortcuts you can set up is an alternative wake word for “Hey Siri.”
To set up a Vocal Shortcut for Siri, follow these steps:
– Open the Settings app on your iPhone
– Go to Accessibility
– Scroll down to Vocal Shortcuts
– Choose “Set Up Vocal Shortcuts”
– Select “Siri” (not Siri Request)
– Enter the new name you want to use to activate Siri, such as “Computer”
Once you have set your new wake word, you can use it to activate Siri on your iPhone. It’s important to note that this feature is limited to the iPhone and does not sync with other devices like HomePod. You will still need to use “Siri” for those devices.
When using the Vocal Shortcut, you will need to pause briefly after stating the wake word before giving a command. Unlike with Siri, where you can speak a complete phrase without pausing, the Vocal Shortcut requires you to wait for the wake word to activate Siri before giving a command.
Due to the slight delay in activation, this may not be a permanent solution for everyone. However, Siri will still respond to “Hey Siri” in addition to the custom wake word you set up.
Vocal Shortcuts can be used to trigger any shortcut, set up app commands, adjust system settings like volume or screen brightness, and even activate features like Control Center. This feature can also be paired with a custom sound instead of a spoken word, making it a useful accessibility option for those who need alternative ways to control their devices.
In addition to changing Siri’s wake word, iOS 18 includes other updates such as new features for CarPlay, visual animations when interacting with buttons on the iPhone, compatibility information for different iPhone models, and the ability to send messages via satellite. These enhancements showcase Apple’s ongoing commitment to improving user experience and accessibility across its devices.
