“I myself am processor computer and I know that in my area, there are a lot of people who want to have an international experience, learn a different way of working, of discovering a new culture. Except that it is not easy to say ‘I expatriates’, explains Marion Felix, the co-founder, with Maxime Soweif, this recruitment agency was born in February 2019. There are brakes – including the administration – and we don’t necessarily all good information… Maplr is to accompany people on all stages : from the research of employment to the facility, passing by integration and school children.”

“Create a community”
Designed as a “facilitator of expatriation”, the “Maple” program is completely free for job applicants at the outset. “We are funded by the companies that we hire to bring them into relationship with the best talent,” explains the young entrepreneur. All businesses in Quebec are in the boom of digital transition, there is a big shortage on these profiles qualified and the French are very sought after.” The process ? Maplr pre-screen the candidates technically (“the companies ask for at least two years of experience”) and a test of their motivation. “I verify that this is not just a whim and I have tried to give maximum information – there are no good sides in Québec, the winter is long, there are fewer holidays in France – to avoid disappointments,” says Marion Felix, who also selected the applicants on their “way of being” and their “state of mind”. “It is necessary that the people are open, caring, they have a desire to share, as we seek to create a community, a support network.”

once the job is found, Maplr assists workers in obtaining their temporary work permit (“we are not lawyers immigration, but we advise them on the process, papers to gather, etc”) and answers all of their questions about the relocation (what is the cost of living, in what area do install ? etc). In Quebec, newcomers can also count on the members of the group to accelerate their integration – Maplr regular meetings (aperitifs of welcome, weekends at the cottage, etc) – and give them a boost in case of need. “The idea is that nobody should be alone,” Marion says Felix.
projects in Vancouver and Toronto
In the year 2019, twenty workers have benefited from the services of Maplr and thirty people in total (spouses and children included) have started a new life across the Atlantic. But this is only the beginning… “We receive a hundred applications every month and we work with a dozen of clients, both start-ups and large groups”, a figure in the thirties. The young shoot, just installed in Montreal – during the first year, the co-founders have remained in France, while multiplying the number of round-trips in the Beautiful Province – has already planned two new hires in-house to support its development. It also intends to position itself on other cities (Vancouver and Toronto), and create new communities Maplr.

“Here, we feel that we can get a place, it’s super exciting, ensures Marion Felix. There are opportunities, the salaries are much more attractive, not to mention that the developers are not perceived the same way in North America and in France… Here, we’re not seen as geeks behind their computers but like rock stars ! Businesses know that they need us for their growth. What’s more, degrees are not necessarily all. I accompanied a developer self-taught, in the conversion, which was not able to find a job well paid in France because it wouldn’t fit in the boxes. He arrived in Canada, very motivated, and its evolution has been very rapid : at the end of a month, the start-up in which he is working has increased by 15% and gave him shares in the company because he is too good ! This kind of stories, I have never seen in France…”
