Nintendo is cracking down on the modding site GameBanana with multiple DMCA notices. The popular community site has received over 60 takedown requests in just a few days, with 40 of them specifically targeting a member named Waikuteru. This has resulted in Waikuteru’s profile being emptied of all mod submissions.
The targeted mods include Zelda mods such as a randomizer for Tears of the Kingdom, as well as custom maps like Lon Lon Ranch and Skyview Temple. Mods for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have also been affected by the takedowns. When visiting the mod pages, users are now greeted with a message stating that any content subject to a DMCA takedown must be removed from the site.
Waikuteru is considering issuing a counter notice in response to the takedowns, expressing doubts about their validity. If the takedowns are legitimate, Nintendo will have 14 days to respond accordingly. In the meantime, Waikuteru has uploaded the Zelda mods in question onto MEGA.
This isn’t the first time Nintendo has taken action against unauthorized mods and content. In the past, they have targeted the Switch emulator Yuzu and numerous fan-made games. The company has a history of being strict with copyright enforcement, especially when it comes to their intellectual property.
