The PSOE accuses the PP of “opportunist, populist and demagogue” for proposing evictions of ‘squatters’ in a maximum of 24 hours

MADRID, 2 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of Podemos Rafael Mayoral has branded the Royal Family this Wednesday as “usurpers” for occupying the Marivent Palace, in Palma de Mallorca, and has asked that the transfer of this space agreed in 1973 by the Majorcan Provincial Council be annulled and to become a museum.

“Of course there are cases of mugs, there are very mugs who occupy palaces so that their family spends the summer with the Greek Royal Family that supported the Dictatorship of the Colonels,” he said from the speakers’ gallery during the debate on a motion of the PP on the ‘squatting’

In this context, Mayoral has issued a warning to the Royal Family: “Look at Meirás, because Marivent will be next and a museum will be opened that our people will be able to enjoy against the usurpers”, he said, alluding to the country house that the Franco family during their vacations in Galicia.

In addition, the deputy of United We Can has charged against the PP for his motion and for the housing policy that he developed from the Government. “A firm hand with the weak and always weak with the strong”, he has denounced, recriminating them with the “hypocrisy” with which, in his opinion, they conduct themselves on this issue.

Also the socialist Uxia Tizón has disqualified the motion of the ‘popular’ in which, among other things, they propose setting a maximum term of 24 hours for the evictions of ‘squatted’ properties. Tizón has branded the PP as “opportunistic” for proposing to lower the deadline just after the PSOE proposed one of 48 hours.

“We are not going to get into the rag of populism and demagoguery,” emphasized the socialist deputy, accusing the PP of trying to “confuse” people by equating evictions for trespassing or usurpation with evictions for non-payment.” “Ignorance or bad faith “, he added.

Tizón thus responded to the ‘popular’ Ana María Zurita who has accused the PSOE of acting with “maximum inconsistency” for having proposed that the ‘squatters’ can be evicted within a maximum of 48 hours after having, in his opinion, ” legalized squatting” through the decree law that suspends until December 31 evictions and releases of habitual residence for vulnerable individuals and families.

On his side, the deputy spokesman for Citizens, Edmundo Bal, has stressed that in Spain there is a “legal vacuum” and has advocated increasing the penalties, differentiating whether there is violence or not, whether or not the squatters belong to a criminal organization. or if it is used to commit other crimes. Ciudadanos considers the PP motion insufficient but has announced its support as a first step.

The deputy of Vox Cristina Esteban Calonje has denounced that the Police cannot act in the face of this phenomenon because it lacks an adequate legal framework to do so and that is why companies such as ‘Desokupa’ have emerged and neighborhood patrols have been set up to protect homes, which which, he has warned, can lead to this “ending like the wild west.”

Esteban has accused the PP of not having done enough against this phenomenon when he governed and has asked that “since they now copy Vox” they also demand measures against “restlessness”. The deputy of Foro Asturias Isidro Martínez Oblanca has also demanded that action be taken against tenants who stop paying rent, but stay in the flats.

The PNV will abstain from the PP’s motion, according to Mikel Legarda, who has summoned the groups to seek an agreement that will strengthen the regulation on this matter. The PDeCAT deputy Genís Boadella, whose group will support the ‘popular’ text, has also emphasized this point.

For his part, Josep Pagès, from Junts, after recalling that Catalonia concentrates 42% of occupations, has announced that his formation will present a bill in which, among other things, he proposes that 48 hours be given for evictions in “criminal occupations”.

In contrast, the Compromís deputy, Joan Baldoví, has defended that the current law is sufficiently “guaranteeing” and has rejected the “electoral or alarmist” proposals of the PP.
