DAVOS (SWITZERLAND), 26 May. (DPA/PE) –
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not win the war launched in Ukraine in February, as the Russian military offensive “has failed to achieve any of its strategic objectives.”
Davos has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), from where he pointed out that “the conquest of the entire Ukraine by Russia seems even more distant today than at the beginning of the war”, more than three months ago.
“More than ever, Ukraine is committed to a European future,” said Scholz, who on other occasions has been reluctant to accelerate the process so that the country can enter the European Union in a short period of time.
Scholz has emphasized during his speech the “brutality” of the “Russian war”, against which he has also highlighted international unity. In this sense, he has attributed to the invasion that there are “two friends” like Sweden and Finland who want to join NATO: “They are more than welcome!”
The chancellor considers that Putin has underestimated the response that the large Western blocs would give and that he has sought to return to an outdated world order, in which “war was a common instrument in politics” and the strongest countries dictated the rules.
“In this multipolar world, very different countries and regions demand greater political prominence in accordance with their growing economic and demographic weight”, he stated. According to Scholz, “there is no threat in this.”
Scholz recalled that Germany has invited South Africa, Senegal, India, Indonesia and Argentina as rotating president of the G7 to this year’s summit, convened at the end of June, because “they represent countries and regions whose cooperation the world needs to advance in the global challenges of the future”.
