“I hope to enjoy again and return the joy to the fans”
BARCELONA, 10 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The player Sergi Roberto will continue one more season at FC Barcelona, ??a team of which he is one of the captains, after reaching an agreement with the club to extend the contract until June 2023 and with a termination clause of 400 million euros.
“FC Barcelona and the player Sergi Roberto have reached an agreement to renew their contract until June 30, 2023. The termination clause is set at 400 million euros.
Sergi Roberto, who would have lowered his salary to sign this renewal, was “happy” to be able to continue being a Blaugrana and have the confidence of his coach, Xavi Hernández.
“He told me to put the injury behind me and to have an operation and from the first moment he showed me confidence. I will restore their confidence with results on the pitch,” assured the versatile winger and midfielder.
The one from Reus, number ’20’ of the team, recalled that he has been “half a life” at Barça and that he hopes to “enjoy again”. “I hope to return the joy to the fans. We all have to be united and contribute our grain of sand”, he valued.
However, this season he barely had a presence in the team due to a thigh muscle injury that kept him out for a long time. In total he played 9 games in LaLiga Santander –with 2 goals and 1 assist– and another three games in the Champions League.
Trained at La Masia, he reached the first team in the 2010/11 season, and made his debut at the age of 19 at the Santiago Bernabéu in a Clásico corresponding to the first leg of the Champions League semifinals. It’s been nine seasons with a first team record.
He has scored 12 goals so far, with 37 assists, in 316 official matches. Without a doubt, his most iconic goal was achieved on May 8, 2017, at the end of the comeback (6-1) against PSG in the ‘Champions’.
In his track record he has a total of 23 titles –2 Champions Leagues, 6 Leagues, 6 King’s Cups, 5 Spanish Super Cups, 2 European Super Cups and 2 Club World Cups–.
In addition, since 2018 he has been among the four captains of the squad. With the departure of Javier Mascherano, the man from Reus became the fourth captain and, after three seasons, this past year he became the third captain of the first team.
