He assures that he will comply with this Government commitment if he manages to add the necessary support

BRUSELAS, 21 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has once again affirmed this Friday that he does not have sufficient parliamentary support to undertake the reform of the crime of sedition, which ERC sets as a condition for approving the General State Budgets (PGE).

In this regard, he pointed out that his position is known, and that he considers that Spain has a Penal Code that in some crimes “is not comparable” to other European democracies. “It is not something that politics says, it is what the penalists themselves say,” he stated at a press conference after the European Council meeting.

Thus, he has pointed out that this “cannot be an exercise in theory but rather has to be forged in the Cortes and therefore they need support. “Today it does not seem that we have it”, he has transferred, before assuring that if that parliamentary majority “occurs”, the Government will comply with that commitment.

In addition, he wanted to separate this reform from the approval of the PGE by pointing out that “one thing has nothing to do with the other” and that the accounts are necessary to respond to the crisis and to the order launched by the president of Russia Vladimir Putin.

The head of the Executive has made these statements after the ERC announced that it will not submit an amendment to the entire budget project — like Bildu and PNV — which allows the parliamentary process to continue advancing.

On this same matter, the Minister of Territorial Policy and Government Spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, has responded this morning to the ERC’s request to reform the crime of sedition to give its support to the Budget, which they will be able to talk about this issue “later” , at another time, but now the “priority” is the protection of the middle and working classes in the General State Budgets.

During her visit to the Arganda town hall, accompanied by the general secretary of the PSOE in Madrid, Juan Lobato, the Executive Spokesperson reminded ERC that in the public accounts for 2023 there are “sufficient arguments” for her to support them.

In this sense, he recalled that the Government of Pedro Sánchez is open to dialogue and has fostered unprecedented progress in normalizing the situation in Catalonia, thanks to everyone’s efforts, including the Generalitat and the ERC.
