MADRID, 19 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will meet this Thursday morning in Brussels with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, to discuss Midcat, as reported by government sources on Wednesday.
It was Macron who on October 7, at the end of the informal European council in Prague, announced a meeting of three to discuss Midcat in Paris. However, given that the three leaders would meet in Brussels, it was considered better that it be held in the European capital on the occasion of the European Council on Thursday and Friday, the sources have specified.
The meeting, in which the three leaders will be accompanied by their energy ministers, has been an initiative of Macron, something that the Spanish government considers positive.
The sources consulted have trusted that the appointment will serve to clarify the doubts that France has about this project, which is good for Europe but also for the Gallic country and that has future prospects in relation to green hydrogen, beyond the initial use that can be done to transport gas from the Iberian Peninsula, and convince them to put it into operation.
The French president said in Prague that together with Sánchez and Costa he would find “very pragmatic agreements with three, because that is how things are done that are done well, European style.”
However, he once again questioned the suitability of Midcat to solve the current energy crisis, since it is a project that “crosses the Pyrenees through a protected area” and therefore would not be the best option or “coherent” with the climate agenda and protection of biodiversity.
“I believe that one way or another, sooner rather than later, we are going to reach an agreement that manages to marry all the sensitivities and all the concerns that France has in this case,” Sánchez said at the time.
