VIANA DO CASTELO (PORTUGAL), 4 Nov. (EUROPE PRESS) –
Spain, Portugal and France give themselves until December 15 to present to the EU their proposal for a new Green Energy Corridor, the initiative agreed by Pedro Sánchez, Antonio Costa and Emmanuel Macron on October 20 and which will take the relief to the Midcat gas pipeline project.
This was stated in a joint press conference by Sánchez and Costa at the end of the Spanish-Portuguese summit, in which energy and interconnections were one of the issues addressed.
The three leaders have met for next December 9 in Alicante but work is already underway so that “we can present a common project to the EU with a deadline of December 15”, the Portuguese Prime Minister has indicated. The president of the European Commission, Úrsula Von der Leyen, will also be present at that meeting, according to Sánchez.
The Alicante meeting, the President of the Government has pointed out, will serve to discuss “deadlines”, costs and who is going to finance this Green Energy Corridor that will serve to transport “hydrogen and logically also gas” and will do so between Barcelona and Marseille .
Likewise, Sánchez has wanted to dispel the debate that this initiative has generated in Portugal, stressing that it includes guaranteeing electrical interconnections and in this sense has assured that Spain “will fulfill its commitments as it cannot be otherwise”.
In addition, he pointed out that he also plans to complete the renewable gas interconnection between Celorico da Beira and Zamora (CelZa), which will be precisely one of the components of the Green Energy Corridor.
This is stated in fact in the joint statement, which specifies that “taking into account the European dimension of this project”, Spain and Portugal “will work closely with the European Commission in the coming weeks, especially to determine European funding sources” .
