MADRID, 24 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Territorial Policy and Government Spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, has insisted today that the King Emeritus has missed an opportunity, with his first visit to Spain after two years, to explain his “not very exemplary conduct”. However, she has not wanted to rule on the possibility that Don Juan Carlos establishes his residence in Spain again.
When asked, after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, about what the Emeritus should give explanations, the Spokesperson has specified that “it has been verified that the King Emeritus had little exemplary conduct”.
For this reason, the Government believes that a person who has occupied the Head of State must give an explanation about these behaviors to the citizens. This, he has recalled, has been the position that the Executive has maintained.
And he added that what they found yesterday is that this first visit would have been an opportunity for “accountability” that they believe “democracy deserves” in our country.
In this regard, sources from the Executive have been upset with the nature of the visit and the excessive public exposure it has had when participating in the regattas and have described it as a “show”.
However, other government sources do not believe that the King has sought that level of visibility and think that it was not possible for the trip to take place with less exposure. However, they specify that they expected the King Emeritus to send some message that could reassure society and believe that the way in which he has carried out the visit goes against his image.
In addition, they have rejected the criticism issued by the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who accused the Executive of discrediting State institutions and specifically the Head of State and have defended that the Government has acted in an “exquisite” manner with respect to the visit of Juan Carlos de Borbón.
On whether she considers that, for the sake of transparency, the Royal House should give more details of the private meeting that the King Emeritus and King Felipe VI held yesterday, the spokeswoman has referred to Zarzuela alleging that it was a private meeting. “It is the Royal House that has to assess whether to offer more information,” she added.
And he added that the “priority” is now on other issues such as those addressed by the Council of Ministers in which an investment of 12,000 million euros has been approved for the transformation of the Spanish economy. That, he has pointed out, is something “unprecedented” that affects not only our children, but also our grandchildren.
However, the Spokesperson wanted to take advantage of the occasion to “vindicate the State model, the parliamentary Monarchy”, recognizing the work of Felipe VI and also highlighting “the Government’s line of work”. She thus referred to the Royal Decree recently approved by the Executive and which, she has said, “advanced in the exercise of transparency and exemplary”, adjusting to accountability in the same way that the rest of the State does.
