The request for asylum in the European Union shot up 85 percent in the last year and in the month of February alone, 54,565 requests for international protection were registered, almost double the number from the same month of the previous year.

According to statistics published by Eurostat, in February 2022, 85 percent more refugee applications were formalized in the Twenty-seven than in the same year of 2021 and also 3 percent more than in January.

This last year has changed a lot the situation with regard to refugee flows. During this time, the special measures due to the pandemic, which limited entry to the EU from abroad, have declined, and a new crisis has also arisen due to the war in Ukraine.

In January, 355 Ukrainians applied for asylum, compared to 2,379 in February. In any case, people fleeing the war in Ukraine do not need to enter the EU as refugees, since the country maintains a visa liberalization policy with the bloc that allows Ukrainians to stay in the territory for 90 days. visa-free community

In addition, during the crisis the EU launched temporary protection that guarantees the same rights to all displaced Ukrainians throughout the European Union.
