MADRID, 23 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Real Madrid were proclaimed champions of LaLiga Santander 22 days ago, four days before the end of LaLiga Santander, lifting their 35th title in the competition, the second in the last three years, an example of white regularity that is uncommon in the domestic championship in the last decade.
In these last three campaigns, the Madrid team has maintained a record in the domestic championship that has not been seen for years and that has resulted in two titles, in 2020 and 2022, and in fighting until the last day in 2021 against the champion Atlético de Madrid, something unusual in recent years and caused by disconnections due to focusing too much on other competitions or bad starts.
In fact, this competitive improvement in the regularity tournament comes after being very far away both in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 campaigns, when they finished third, 17 and 19 points respectively behind the champion, FC Barcelona.
This big difference below the leadership also occurred in 2012-2013, in the campaign that, like in 2017-2018, defended the title and when despite being second in the table, the distance with the first classified, Barça, was 15 points.
From there, he chained three good domestic seasons, although without any award. In 2013-2014, he was in the fight to the end with the Blaugrana team and Atlético de Madrid, but he ended up paying for the wear and tear of the Champions League and ended up three points behind the colchoneros.
In 2014-2015, the Whites had an almost perfect second third of the campaign, chaining 16 games at the top of the table. After losing the first game of 2015 and breaking a 22-game winning streak, Real Madrid gradually deflated and lost a four-point lead over Barcelona, ??who were ultimately champions by two points.
The 2015-2016 season had a different script. The merengue team fell off the hook and despite swapping Rafa Benítez for Zinédine Zidane, the defeat in the derby against Atlético de Madrid left them 12 points behind Barça at the end of February. Even so, he kept the faith and chained a great streak that, helped by a drop in Barça, made him reach the last day with one point, although his rival did not fail.
In addition, next season Real Madrid will have the complicated task of defending the title and being champion two consecutive years, something that they have not achieved since 2007-2008, when they revalidated with Bernd Schuster the crown won in 2006-2007 with Fabio Capello and another comeback culminated with the victory in the last game against Mallorca. In 2008-2009 he stayed nine points behind Pep Guardiola’s Barça, whom he tried to stalk until the remembered 2-6 win at the Bernabéu.
As for his numbers, the 13-time European champion has not been able to overcome the 90-point barrier despite winning the title, a ceiling he has not exceeded since he became champion in 2017 (93 points). And it is that the competition chains four courses without a leader with that forcefulness that the 90 units provide since his last two draws against Cádiz and Betis left him with 86 points, but with a 13 advantage over Barça, his greatest advantage over the Catalan team since the 17 of the 2007-2008. Since 2010, Real Madrid has reached 90 units or more in six seasons, winning the title in only four.
Precisely, Cádiz and Villarreal have been the only two teams that have been able to snatch points from Carlo Ancelotti’s team in the two rounds of LaLiga Santander, each of them achieving two draws in the two clashes against Chamartín’s team, the ‘Submarino ‘ with the addition of not having fit.
In the last two decades, the whites have also lived in irregularity when it comes to goalscoring. To his credit he still resists the League with the record of so many in favor, in 2012 and with Mourinho on the bench: 100 points and 121 goals. However, they have not exceeded 100 goals in the domestic championship since 2017, when before that 16-17 campaign he linked seven courses above a hundred goals.
And it is that the whites saw their goalscoring capacity diminished with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo at the end of the 17-18 campaign, the last one with great records (94 goals). Since his departure, the barrier of 70 goals has not been exceeded until the current season, when they have reached 80 goals, supported by the success of the ‘scorer’ Karim Benzema (27) and the explosion of Vinicius Jr (17), the the only ones together with Marco Asensio (10) to sign double scoring figures.
On the other hand, at a defensive level, Real Madrid has lowered its performance somewhat compared to the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons when it conceded 25 and 28 goals respectively, with 31 goals conceded, although only one goal less than Sevilla, the better in this regard.
