U.S. Lawmakers Push for Release of Detained Binance Executive in Nigeria

U.S. Representatives French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan recently visited Tigran Gambaryan at Kuje prison in Nigeria, where the Binance executive has been detained since February on money-laundering charges related to his work with the crypto exchange. Hill, a Republican from Arkansas, and Houlahan, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, visited the country to discuss anti-terrorism efforts and took the opportunity to advocate for Gambaryan’s release.

During their visit, Hill shared in a video posted on social media that Gambaryan is currently suffering from malaria and double pneumonia, has lost significant weight, and is not receiving adequate medical attention in the prison. The conditions in Kuje prison are reportedly dire, with inmates including members of the terror group Boko Haram.

Hill emphasized that Gambaryan’s detention is unjust and that he should be allowed to return home to the United States. He has reached out to the U.S. embassy to request support for Gambaryan’s humanitarian release. Additionally, Hill was one of the lawmakers who signed a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to work towards securing Gambaryan’s freedom. Over 100 former prosecutors have also written to Secretary of State Antony Blinken in support of Gambaryan’s release.

Despite ongoing legal proceedings, with the cross-examination of a witness from the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission taking place recently, efforts to secure Gambaryan’s release continue. The case is expected to proceed in the coming days.

The situation surrounding Gambaryan’s detention highlights the challenges faced by Americans who are wrongfully held abroad or taken hostage. It underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts to ensure the protection and fair treatment of individuals like Gambaryan who find themselves in precarious situations while working or traveling overseas.

As the legal process unfolds, it is crucial for advocacy and pressure to be maintained to secure Gambaryan’s release and ensure that he is able to return home safely. The collaboration between U.S. lawmakers, government officials, and legal experts is essential in navigating complex international legal matters and upholding the rights of individuals caught in challenging circumstances abroad.
