These franchisees have chosen several activities allowing them to work each few hours weekly. Portraits of these “slashers-entrepreneurs”.
“When I sold my bakery in 2016, I wanted to enjoy life,” says Thierry Cornet. This fifty-year old who has worked more than seventy hours per week for twenty years and managed 18 employees, now has a bike, sees his buddies, and share the weekend with his wife. “I didn’t want to spend any on anything, and especially not wait until retirement” he warns. In April 2017, it therefore opens up a washing station Elephant Blue near Marne-la-VallĂ©e, with 900 000 euro of investment. “I work two to three hours per day, time to clean up the tracks, reloading of the products and the coiners, to make repairs…” Her own small business running rather well. This “investment” earns between 2 000 to 3 000 euros per month, after deducting the salary of the employee at the mid-time that he has had to hire. “Contrary to what one believes, the automatic wash cycle, it does not work alone. You must remain contactable on his mobile to fly to the rescue of the customers in case of breakdown or of a wrong manip !”, launches the franchisee, who is thinking already to open another station.

Two or more jobs…
As the Elephant Blue, some franchises only require a few hours of work per week, which makes them compatible with studies, a retreat, a family life… or another occupation. “By 2018, nearly 5 million French had a number of professional activities”, reveals about Alain Bosetti, president of the salon EMS (ex-salon des micro-enterprises). “These slashers, as they are called, already represent 15 % of the assets of 18 to 65 years. Their number is growing, and 74 % of them say they have wanted this job, above all to increase their income.”

Other salient fact : 32 % of slashers are exercising their second activity as entrepreneurs. And the phenomenon is only just beginning. “The bridges between employment and entrepreneurship will multiply and simplify,” says Alain Bosetti. “In this context, prophesies the expert, the slasher-contractor the next few years, will, I believe, be an asset, rather below the age of 30 years or more than 50, from any social category, and motivated by the desire to control his career and his income.”
Arrange his time to his own way
While he was a bartender at Fouquet’s, Nicolas Humbert, 37 years old, has chosen to supplement his income with a parallel activity. “Disappointed by the evolution of my business, frustrated not almost not see the children because of my schedule, I wanted to prepare for my conversion. My companion, she did not want to leave his salaried position.” In 2016, the couple invests 15 000 euros to launch a activity of indoor football (in balloons inflatable) designed by the trademark license Bubble Bump. The idea : to offer lovers of the round ball sessions of football, in the evening and on the weekend, at Ivry, near paris. “With 100 euros margin per hour (charged 250 euros), it is ultra-cost-effective. It was enough of 17 monthly bookings to reach the point of death. This represents thirty-five hours of work per month with the trips, the preparation, administration, and communication.”
Juggling the timetables of their employees, Nicolas and Aurelie Humbert must sometimes do two days in one. No pain, No gain (“No success without effort”), coward, Nicholas. While customers are having fun, it involves : the old handballeur high-level comments on the parties, and is quickly overwhelmed by the crowd. He resigned from the Fouquet’s in mid-2017 and acquires two other licences, The Defence and Meudon. “Since 2016, I could have easily put me 50000 euros in the pocket, but I preferred to reinvest.” These three activities will consume now the equivalent of one full-time. But he adds : “I set up my time as I want, I take advantage of children… And I will be there for my baby arriving soon.”
Take into account the hidden costs
All part-time activities are not as profitable, and do not provide a report as successful. It is even quite rare. “Beware of sales models “multi-tier”, in which it is necessary to co-opt other vendors to receive a commission”, alert as Bernard-Yves Saint-Paul consultancy BYSP&GO. “One does not become rich in flemmardant home”, he adds. Citing the example of the network Toxan, a concept of home sale of tailor-made clothing, which allows you to work at their own pace through a partnership contract, the consultant, points out the dismal numbers of sellers dilettantes.

The concepts based on automatic machines (dispensers, laundromats, self-service…), too, have their shortcomings : “It is necessary to take into account the hidden costs, related to the expiry dates of the products, fault, vandalism”, warns the expert, quoted by the distributors of the pizza burnt to the ground by competitors. All costs for maintenance, surveillance, insurance, heavy loads, it is… automatic. “Choice of location, knowledge of the economic fabric, tight management : when is part-time, not working at a loss, it is necessary to be as rigorous as in a full-time activity,” concludes Bernard-Yves Saint-Paul.
