MADRID, 10 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, has urged the European Union to speed up the accession process and turn the page on the current “gray area”, because the current status represents a “temptation” for Russia.

The president has called for turning words into actions, during a telematic speech before the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen in which he has reiterated some of the messages that he has been launching since kyiv formally requested accession.

“If polls show that 71 percent of Europeans see Ukraine as part of the European family, why are some politicians hesitant to allow us to move towards the EU?” Zelensky said, without naming these skeptics.

“We need to move from words that Ukraine is part of the European family to action. In the coming weeks, the EU can take a historic step that will show that words about the Ukrainian people’s belonging to the European family are not empty” , has added.

The European Commission plans to begin studying next week the accession of Ukraine, as well as that of Georgia and Moldova, which should result in an opinion on whether or not the conditions are met to start the entry process. Brussels hopes to adopt the opinion on the integration of the three countries into the EU before the summit of heads of state and government of the bloc on June 23 and 24.
