VALENCIA, 11 Apr. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The DAIS project, developed by the ITI technology center, has set itself the objective of advancing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ‘Edge Computing’ devices, through an Information Technology (IT) architecture that displaces the computing towards the edge of the network,
This European initiative researches and develops AI computing systems to process data closer to its origin, instead of sending it to the cloud, which entails promoting Artificial Intelligence that could be described as “kilometer zero”, as explained by ITI in a statement.
This allows devices to make “smarter decisions faster, without the need to connect to external data centers, thus reducing external traffic, and maintaining data privacy and ownership.”
One of the main results achieved in this initiative, in the words of the project manager at ITI, Ana María Arias Beltrán, has been “significant advances that highlight the importance of dynamic and comprehensive management of network resources to maintain connectivity in systems without compromising efficiency or quality of service.
“This approach has been decisive in environments with various technologies, since it has facilitated the interaction between them,” which has allowed AI applications to efficiently access information and manage devices. “This enables real-time information analysis and improves the deployment and effectiveness of AI-based solutions within the field of network management and orchestration,” he highlighted.
This project, financed by the European Commission through the Key Digital Technologies Joint Undertaking (KDT JU) program with a budget of 36 million euros, has had the participation of 47 partners from eleven European countries to improve the combination of AI with ‘Edge Computing’, achieving lower energy use, bandwidth and network latency, as well as greater data privacy and security.
“Our research has not focused on new algorithms, but rather solves the problems of executing existing algorithms on these widely distributed peripheral devices that are designed,” explained Miguel Bravo Arribas, data scientist at ITI.
Specifically, the project has focused on developing intelligent and safe solutions applied to the industrial field in Europe throughout the entire supply chain. To achieve this objective, research and innovation activities have been structured around eight different supply chains.
On the one hand, five of these chains have been dedicated to providing both the hardware and software necessary to implement Artificial Intelligence industrially in various network topologies. On the other hand, the three remaining chains have demonstrated how this pan-European effort responds to known AI challenges in various functional areas.
This research and innovation project has covered both digital and analog components, including low energy sensors and orchestration technologies. In addition, a secure integration of these components with the Cloud and Fog has been guaranteed, thus facilitating seamless interoperability between different computing environments.
Demonstrations of industrial Artificial Intelligence tasks executed on the components developed by DAIS have been carried out, “demonstrating their feasibility and applicability in real industrial environments.” Furthermore, DAIS results contribute to advancement and standardization in the field of Edge Artificial Intelligence.
Finally, ITI has participated in this project together with other Spanish partners, such as the Galician Technological Center of Telecommunications Foundation (GRADIANT), Schneider Electric Spain, the University of Granada, Safran Electronics and Defense Spain, Technologies and Telematic Services and Systems (TST ) and the University of Cantabria.
