MADRID, 4 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Spanish athletics was also left with honey on their lips this Saturday in search of medals in the European indoor event that is being held in Istanbul, with two fourth places from Óscar Husillos, in 400 meters, and Esther Guerrero, in 1,500.
Husillos was unable to defend his title from two years ago, nor was he able to climb the podium occupied by the Norwegian Karsten Warholm (45.35), the Belgian Julien Watrin, who achieved a national record (45.44), and the Swedish Carl Bengtström (45.77).
The man from Palencia, who was hurt by having to start on lane 2 after Belgian Alexander Doom abandoned, gained a position by beating the Czech Matej Krsek, but could not get close to the podium. Husillos, who two weeks ago set the Spanish record at 45.58, finished fourth with 46.24. The man from Astudillo will be able to make up for it this Sunday at the Ataköy Arena with the 4×400.
Meanwhile, Esther Guerrero, after a year off the slopes due to injury, and Águeda Marqués, fourth and seventh both with a personal best, signed another two finalist places in the 1,500. The Catalan and the Segovian went out to the front, until the British Laura Muir launched the final attack.
Guerrero held on in the fight for bronze, but in the last 200 the Polish Sofia Ennaoui increased the distance to close the podium for Muir and the Romanian Claudia Mihaela Bobocea. With a time of 4:04.86, the Catalan finished fourth, second position of all time and which is the best Spanish brand in history in a European. Marqués remained in finalist positions throughout the race, to finish in seventh place (4:08.72).
In addition, in the semifinals of the men’s 800, Javier Mirón was left out because of the last 300, where he did not give the bellows to the Alicante, fifth and without luck in the times. In the second ‘semi’, Adrián Ben took victory with 1:46.82 and with a direct ticket to a new final.
