The current Spanish 400 m champion confesses that the 4×400 “is prepared to fight for everything” at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul

MADRID, 28 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Óscar Husillos from Palencia does not want to put the “favourites poster” in the Spanish 4×400 relay, although he does believe that he will “fight for everything” in the European Indoor Track Championship in Istanbul (Turkey) that starts this Thursday, so he will not be in the fight for the medals “surely” it would leave them “with the face of idiots”.

“We come from achieving a large sum of marks in the Spanish Championship individually to be able to qualify for the relay. We come from a concentration with good vibes in training, they have gone very well. The team is prepared to fight for everything, it is a final to six, we have to be convinced that we can play a great role”, affirmed Husillos in an interview with Europa Press before traveling to Istanbul.

The national 4×400 relay team for Istanbul will be made up of Óscar Husillos, Iñaki Cañal, Manuel Guijarro, Lucas Búa, David García Zurita and Markel Fernández. Husillos valued the “good vibes” that exist in the training sessions of the Spanish relay. “The more attuned we are, the greater ‘feeling’ and the better sensations we will have, whether it goes well or goes wrong,” he said.

“We have spent four very good days of concentration in Ourense, we all went to dinner together, with the ‘little ones’ who join the ‘older’ group. We are in good health,” David García added about the ‘newbies’ and Markel Fernandez.

Husillos put Belgium and England, who “always scratch”, in the group of favorite theorists, although he highlighted the most recent ‘historical’ of Spain -with silver in the ‘Indoor’ World Cup and fourth place in the European Championship in 2022- . “Four years ago we were runners-up in Europe, last year my teammates won world silver. We have to be on top, we know we have to be,” he said.

“We don’t want to hang ourselves as favourites, but the team is there to fight for everything. Playing a good role in the European Championship, with the brands we have, would mean fighting for the podium and achieving the Spanish record. Although the races are very ‘bitches’, each one is a world, so the medals are very important”, added the sprinter.

The Castilian-Leonese athlete was proclaimed champion of Spain in the 400 meters less than two weeks ago in the event held at the Gallur track in Madrid, after completing an impeccable performance from the beginning to break the national ‘indoor’ record with an extraordinary 45.58 -second best European brand of the year-. Thus, the man from Palencia appealed to “that positive mentality”.

“If after the season I’ve done, second in the European ranking, I’m not in the final and fighting for a medal, I’ll surely be disappointed,” he said. “Just like if we are not fighting for the medals with the relay, surely we will be left with the face of idiots or with a bad taste in our mouths,” he asserted emphatically.

In addition, he asked to continue with the “dynamics” of 2022, in which he returned to the “path of positivity after bad years.” “Doing the job as we are doing it, the good results have to come directly,” she said.

And it is that the latest successes contributed to this exponential growth in monitoring that Spanish athletics is currently experiencing, with “more visibility and audience”, thanks to social networks and advertising and the press. “The other day there were no entries in Gallur since months before, this indicates that Spanish athletics is in great health, we also have to create this show to bring the public closer”, he affirmed.

Finally, Husillos appreciated the notable absences of Mohamed Katir, Mariano García and Maribel Pérez, among others. “They are their decisions, I am not the one to plan, I stick to my work. They believe they can fight with the best in the summer World Cup, it is their decision and we must respect it,” he settled.
