MADRID, 2 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has defended this Thursday the PSOE’s response to the ‘Mediator’ case by pointing out that they have acted resoundingly and immediately by withdrawing the seat of deputy and expelling Juan Bernardo Fuentes from the party and has asked that the rest of the parties do the same.
Speaking to the media from Denmark, the second stop on a preparatory trip for the Spanish Presidency of the EU that also stops in Ireland and Finland, he pointed out that when an action occurs that does not correspond “with the standards of exemplary is required” of a political leader by the PSOE, the answer is “clear, resounding and immediate: expulsion from the party and withdrawal from the seat”, he indicated without mentioning the deputy.
Sánchez has also indicated that he would like the rest of the parties to do the same, in reference to the PP, since in recent days several members of the Government and the PSOE have accused the ‘popular’ leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, of being close and lack of forcefulness with those accused of corruption in the PP such as the president of the Ibiza Council, Vicent Mari or the former minister, Jorge Fernánez Díaz, whom the Prosecutor’s Office asks for 15 years in prison for the ‘Kitchen’ case.
The head of the Executive has responded in this way when asked about how he intends to facilitate the investigation of the ‘Mediator’ case and about the electoral cost that the appearance of this issue can entail for the PSOE a few months after the regional and municipal elections of 28 of May.
The ongoing judicial investigation tries to clarify an alleged plot involving the former deputy Fuentes Curbelo, the mediator Antonio Navarro and the Civil Guard Division General, Francisco Espinosa Navas, who collected bribes from businessmen under the promise of favors. The plot organized visits to the Congress of Deputies and subsequent meals and parties with prostitutes and in which cocaine was consumed, all at the expense of the businessmen.
On the other hand, Sánchez, who has appeared together with his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen, has indicated that the trip took place to listen to the priorities of the Government of Copenhagen for the Spanish Presidency that begins in the second half of the year and incorporate them into his own objectives .
In this sense, he has conveyed that they are obliged to close agreements on important issues such as the Migration and Asylum pact and also the way in which they are going to respond to the war in Ukraine and support President Volodimir Zelenski.
In addition, he stressed that it could be an important few months to establish specific policies to improve Europe’s competitiveness and advance, for example, in the reform of the electricity market to have a common platform to be able to compare gas to third countries and accelerate the green transition process. As she has warned, there are many issues that must be closed before the end of the year because in 2024 there are elections to the European Parliament.
For her part, the Prime Minister of Denmark hopes that the Spanish Presidency of the EU will serve to accelerate the green transition, although she has warned that stronger cooperation on Defense is also needed. In this sense, she has pointed out that at the moment all the EU partners are making a lot of donations to Ukraine but they have to work more together in the future.
Thus, she has stressed that the two main issues for this period are, in her opinion, the green transition and the war in Ukraine and she has been convinced that Spain will demonstrate that the EU has to remain united to continue supporting Kiev in the same way that has been done so far, because this unit has been one of the strongest weapons.
