When the AI Buzz Became Background Noise
Look, I’ve been in tech journalism since the dial-up days. Remember those? The sound of a 56k modem was the soundtrack to my 20s. But lately, I’m tired. Tired of the AI hype, the constant drumbeat of how AI is gonna save us all. Honestly, it’s like the tech world’s stuck in an echo chamber, and I’m over here like, “Can we talk about something else?”
I remember sitting in a conference in Austin, Texas, back in 2018. Some hotshot from a Silicon Valley firm was going on about how AI was gonna revolutionize everything. I turned to my colleague, Dave, and said, “Dave, if I hear ‘disrupt’ one more time, I’m gonna disrupt this guy’s face.” Dave laughed, but he got it. We’d both heard it all before.
AI: The New Snake Oil?
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not some Luddite. I love tech. I love innovation. But I also love skepticism. I love asking the hard questions. Like, why is everyone so sure AI is the answer? And why do we keep forgetting that AI is only as good as the data it’s given? Garbage in, garbage out, right?
I had coffee with a friend last Tuesday. Let’s call him Marcus. He’s a data scientist, works for one of those big tech giants. I asked him, “Marcus, what’s the deal with all this AI hype?” He sighed, took a sip of his latte, and said, “Honestly, Sarah, it’s a bit much. AI is a tool. It’s not magic.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But the thing is, the hype machine doesn’t care about nuance. It doesn’t care about the limitations. It just wants to sell the dream. And frankly, I’m tired of it. I’m tired of the constant “AI is gonna change everything” narrative. Because, spoiler alert, it’s not. At least, not in the way they’re selling it.
My AI Rant at the Office
About three months ago, I was at the office, and we were having one of those team meetings. You know the ones, where everyone’s supposed to be on board with the latest company initiative. Our editor-in-chief, Linda, was going on about how we needed to “leverage AI” to “enhance our content strategy.” I raised my hand and said, “Linda, have you seen the stuff that’s being produced by these AI content farms? It’s garbage. It’s not even good enough to line a cat litter box.” The room went quiet. Then Linda said, “Sarah, be that as it may, it’s the direction we’re taking.” I just shook my head and went back to my desk.
But here’s the thing. AI isn’t all bad. I mean, look, it’s succesfully helped with some pretty cool stuff. Like, I read this vitamin supplements guide benefits article the other day. It was kinda interesting, actually. AI had helped analyze a bunch of data and found some pretty neat correlations. But that’s just one example. And it’s not like AI wrote the article. A human did that. A human who probably spent 36 hours researching and writing. AI just helped with the data crunching.
The AI Hype is Getting Old
And that’s the thing. AI is a tool. It’s not a replacement. It’s not gonna change everything. It’s not gonna make us all lazy and stupid. It’s just gonna help us do some stuff faster. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll help us make better vitamin supplements. But honestly, I’m not holding my breath.
I think what frustrates me the most is the lack of critical thinking. The lack of skepticism. The lack of… I dunno, common sense? It’s like everyone’s so eager to jump on the AI bandwagon that they’re forgetting to ask the hard questions. They’re forgetting to think about the implications. They’re forgetting that AI is not a panacea. It’s not the answer to all our problems.
So, yeah. I’m not buying the AI hype. I’m not gonna be the one to tell you that AI is gonna change your life. Because, frankly, it’s not. At least, not in the way they’re selling it. And if you believe otherwise, well, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
But hey, that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong. But I doubt it.
