Look, I’ve Had It With AI
Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been in this tech game for over two decades, and I’ve seen alot of things come and go. But this AI obsession? It’s getting out of hand. I’m not saying it’s all bad, but honestly, the hype is completley out of control.
I remember back in 2005, when I was editing a piece for Tech Monthly, some guy named Marcus—who was a big shot at IBM then—told me, ‘AI is gonna change everything.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, buddy. We’ll see.’ Well, guess what? We saw. And it wasn’t the revolution he promised.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some Luddite. I love tech. I love innovation. But I also love not drinking the Kool-Aid every time some Silicon Valley hotshot says, ‘Trust me, this time it’s different.’
My Problem With AI
So, what’s my beef with AI? It’s not the tech itself. It’s the way it’s being sold. The way it’s being shoved down our throats like we’re all gonna die if we don’t adopt it right now. I mean, come on. I was at a conference in Austin last year, and some CEO—let’s call him Dave—stood up there and said, ‘AI is the future of everything. If you’re not using AI, you’re already obsolete.’
Which… yeah. Fair enough. But here’s the thing, Dave. Not every problem needs an AI solution. Sometimes, a simple algorithm will do. Sometimes, you just need to talk to a real human being.
And don’t even get me started on the whole ‘AI is gonna take our jobs’ thing. I get it, automation is a thing. But it’s not like AI is gonna roll up to your doorstep and say, ‘Hey, buddy, I’m here to take your job. You’re fired.’ It’s a gradual process. And frankly, I think we’re all gonna be just fine.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Now, I’m not saying AI doesn’t have its uses. It does. I mean, look at the stuff it’s doing in healthcare. Diagnosing diseases, developing new drugs, that kinda thing. That’s amazing. I’m all for that. But then you’ve got stuff like AI-generated art. And honestly, I just don’t get the appeal. I mean, sure, it’s cool that a machine can paint a picture. But is it art? I’m not sure but I guess it depends on who you ask.
And then there’s the whole cybersecurity thing. AI can be a great tool for detecting threats. But it can also be a great tool for causing them. I mean, have you seen some of the stuff that’s out there? It’s scary. It’s like we’re living in a world where the bad guys are always one step ahead. And frankly, I’m not sure how we’re gonna catch up.
I was talking to a colleague named Sarah the other day, and she said, ‘You know, AI is like a double-edged sword. It can be used for good, but it can also be used for evil.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, Sarah, I think you’re onto something there.’
AI and the News
Speaking of scary, have you seen what AI is doing to the news industry? I mean, it’s bad enough that we’ve got fake news and deepfakes and all that junk. But now, we’ve got AI writing news articles. And honestly, it’s not great. I mean, I read this piece the other day, and it was so robotic. It was like reading a press release. And I was like, ‘This is not journalism. This is not what we do.’
But here’s the thing, folks. AI is not gonna replace journalists. It’s not gonna replace doctors, or lawyers, or teachers, or any of the other jobs that people are so worried about. Because at the end of the day, we’re human beings. And we need human connection. We need empathy. We need understanding. And AI? It’s not there yet. And I’m not sure it ever will be.
But look, I’m not saying we should ignore AI. We should embrace it. We should use it to make our lives better. But we should also be smart about it. We should be critical. We should be skeptical. And we should never, ever let some CEO named Dave tell us that it’s the future of everything.
So, that’s my take on AI. It’s not all bad. But it’s not all good either. And frankly, I’m gonna keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. Because the hype train? I’m not getting on board.

I was gonna end this piece right there, but then I remembered something. You know how everyone’s always talking about how AI is gonna change the world? Well, guess what? It already has. And not in the way you think. I mean, have you ever tried to have a conversation with Siri? It’s like talking to a brick wall. And don’t even get me started on those stupid chatbots. They’re about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
But here’s the thing, folks. AI is not gonna make us stupid. It’s not gonna turn us into a bunch of mindless zombies who can’t think for ourselves. Because at the end of the day, we’re still human. And we’re still in control. So, let’s not panic. Let’s not freak out. Let’s just take a deep breath, and remember that AI is a tool. It’s not the boss of us.
