But, any coins that had “problems” that prevented them from being graded by PCGS would be left out of their holders. In June 2008, PCGS introduced a “Genuine” service. This would allow PCGS to encapsulate any problem coins in a regular slab. However, the insert would read “GENUINE” instead of the usual grade. A few years later, an adjectival Details grade was created using traditional grading terms.
Every Proof Indian Head gold $3 coins are a prize. All examples are extremely rare. Heritage’s January 2021 Florida United Numismatists auction sold a Proof 1884 Indian Head 3 coin graded PCGS Genuine Uncirculated Details (meaning that it has not worn) for $7,800.
From a mintage of 106, 70 examples may have survived. Heritage states, “This Proof Details example shows signs that a somewhat difficult existence, with scattered contact marks on unnaturally bright yellow gold surfaces.”
