It ensures that “the crimes of sedition and the crimes of rebellion cannot be modified unilaterally”

VITORIA, 28 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, expects “a rectification” by the president of Sánchez to agree with his party on the reform of the Penal Code and continue with the agreement, already advanced, to renew the CGPJ. “It is not easy to agree with this PSOE,” he insisted.

Feijóo, who offered a conference in Vitoria organized by the newspaper El Correo, under the title “Objetivo Actualidad”, recalled that he had suspended open negotiations with the Government on the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary, after the head of the Executive confirmed to him, in a telephone conversation, that his intention continues to be to reform the crime of sedition, despite the fact that government representatives had assured him that this matter was not going to be touched. In addition, he has specified that he transmitted to him that he did not plan to agree with the Popular Party on the modification of the Penal Code.

The leader of the PP has said that “it is an insurmountable inconsistency to agree on the strengthening of the State, at the same time that it is agreed with other parties to leave the State unprotected.” “You will understand that reforming the Law to improve judicial independence is not compatible with reforming the Law to help those who broke the Law. And it is not compatible to talk about the independence of the Judiciary and question the sentences of the highest jurisdictional body of the Judicial Power, which is the Supreme Court,” he said.

In any case, he recalled that he proposed to Pedro Sánchez “to continue advancing in a possible State agreement for the renewal of the CGPJ, after modifying the LOPJ”, in which progress had been made, and at the same time jointly address any reform of the Code Criminal on crimes that “affect the Constitution, the unity of the nation and the territorial organization of the State”, such as the crimes of rebellion and sedition, as well as the criminalization of calling an illegal referendum.

In his opinion, “the crimes of sedition and the crimes of rebellion cannot be modified unilaterally.” For this reason, he asked Sánchez for “a consensus on the reform of the Penal Code and to continue with the consensus on the independence of the Judiciary.”

“The president told me that he did not commit to reforming the Criminal Code in consensus with the Popular Party and, therefore, I understood that at this time it would be incongruous to agree in the morning on the defense of the Constitution and judicial independence, and to agree in the afternoon the change of the crimes on which the unity of the nation and the territorial organization of the State are based,” he indicated.

For Alberto Núñez Feijóo, “that type of inconsistency would not be understood by PSOE voters.” “If the government wants an agreement, we continue to sit at the table, but I ask for agreements on everything, not agreements on one part. Negotiate with the constitutionalists in the morning and agree otherwise in the afternoon with the independentists, I understand that a president of the Government cannot cover both things,” he stressed.

For this reason, he has urged him to choose whether he prefers to agree with the independentists than with the constitutionalists because, if so, “he is wrong.” “No president of the Government has ever done it; let us therefore wait for that rectification and, for my part, I insist, we remain at the disposal of the Government”, he assured.
